This year, from August 19th to September 2nd, the 2026 Tango BA Festival and World Championship brings together thousands of dancers, musicians, and enthusiasts from all over the globe for a two-week celebration of music, culture, and high-stakes competition.

About the Tango World Championship
The scale of the World Championship is truly staggering. Last year, the competition set a historic record with 800 registered couples. To manage this massive influx of talent, the city government established an official network of preliminary branches located in different provinces across Argentina, as well as in select countries around the world. Depending on the ranking of the preliminary branch, the winning couples not only receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Buenos Aires, but they also earn a direct pass into the advanced stages of the World Championship– bypassing the qualifiers to enter directly into the quarterfinals, semifinals, or even the grand final. This rigorous system guarantees an elite level of artistry on the dance floor.
Tango de Pista vs. Tango Escenario
Tango can be danced in a myriad of ways. However, for a global competition to be truly fair, artistry must be evaluated under equal conditions. That is why the World Championship divides competitors into two distinct categories, each with its own style and set of rules:
Salon Tango
This category honors the traditional, social style of tango exactly as it is danced in the authentic milongas of Buenos Aires. To put it in simple words, here the focus is on the intimate connection between the couple, their musicality, and the elegance of their unbroken embrace.
Stage Tango
This is the highly spectacular, choreographic version of the dance. Because couples take the stage to perform individually, this category allows for acrobatic tricks, balletic extensions, and deep dramatic expression that simply wouldn’t be possible on a crowded social dance floor.
Beyond the Competition: The Tango BA Festival
While the World Championship brings the thrill of the contest, it is important to note that it runs parallel to the Tango BA Festival—two distinct but closely intertwined events.
Organized by the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, the festival is a massive cultural celebration that takes over iconic venues across the city. While the competitors battle it out on the dance floor, locals and visitors can immerse themselves in a sprawling lineup of live concerts, theatrical performances, dance masterclasses, and open-air milongas.

The World Championship from the Inside: Secreto Tango’s Talent in Competition
While thousands of spectators watch from the audience, the resident cast of Secreto Tango Society experiences the pressure, the nerves, and the magic firsthand from the dressing rooms and the dance floor.
Champions and Semifinalists
The journey to the Tango World Championship is paved with relentless dedication, and our house dancers are no strangers to this elite stage.
- Our main couple, Estefy Gómez and Fernando Rodriguez, have already reached the pinnacle of global success, having been crowned World Champions in 2019.
- This year, Guadalupe Ponzelli and Lisandro Eberle are bringing a piece of our home to the global stage, competing with a song taken directly from the Secreto Tango repertoire.
- We also celebrate Sabrina Nogueira and Eber Burger, dancers at Secreto that recently became runners-up in the Campeonato Metropolitano (Buenos Aires’ official city championship, held a few months prior).

Our Musicians at the Official Tango Festival
Beyond the dance floor, our musical cast is also taking center stage at the festival’s most prestigious venues.
- Our renowned musicians Fulvio Giraudo and Horacio Romo will be part of the festival’s grand closing night. The Sexteto Mayor will perform at the majestic Teatro Colón on Sunday, August 30 at 8:00 PM.
- One of our exceptional singers, Noelia Moncada, is also featured in the official programming, performing with the Noelia Moncada Quinteto on Friday, August 28 at 7:00 PM at the Centro Cultural 25 de Mayo.
Key Dates and the Tango World Championship Grand Final
While the festival encompasses concerts, classes, and milongas across the city, the absolute highlights are the Grand Finals. These decisive nights take place at the historic Teatro Gran Rex, where the new world champions will be crowned:
- Tango de Pista Final: Tuesday, September 1 at 7:00 PM.
- Tango Escenario Final: Wednesday, September 2 at 7:00 PM.
