Today, we are opening this series by stepping onto the floor with two of these world-class performers: Estefanía Gómez and Fernando Rodríguez.
The World Champions: Fernando Rodríguez & Estefanía Gómez
Crowned World Tango Stage Champions in 2019, Fernando and Estefanía are visionary dancers and choreographers whose artistry has transcended borders. They have toured extensively across the Americas, Europe, and Asia, lending their talent to renowned international productions such as Tango Lovers.
Known for their breathtaking precision and an undeniable, magnetic connection on the floor, they are widely considered one of the most respected stage couples in tango today. Their expertise and flawless technique have even led them to serve as revered judges in international competitions, shaping the next generation of dancers.
A Universal Language, Spoken Up Close
Sitting down to chat with Fernando and Estefanía before a recent performance, we wanted to know where this deep connection to the art form began. During our conversation, Fernando shared that the rhythm of tango was the soundtrack of his childhood, initially sparked by the music his father used to play at home. That early curiosity quietly grew, eventually blossoming into the lifelong passion that would take him to the global stage.
Yet, as we talked about what continues to inspire them today, it became clear that for this champion couple, the true essence of the dance goes far beyond technical perfection; it is a profound form of human connection. “I believe tango is like speaking a language,” Estefanía explains with a smile. “What amazes me is that anywhere in the world, you can embrace a stranger, understand each other, and communicate.”

When we asked them what makes performing at Secreto Tango Society so unique compared to the massive stages they are used to, it became clear that they converse with the exact same profound connection they share on the dance floor. Seeming to hold the exact same perspective and having perceived the very same nuances of the room, the conversation flowed effortlessly between them, constantly finishing each other’s thoughts.
Q: What do you enjoy most about Secreto Tango?
E: What I enjoy the most is the closeness. I think it’s a show that isn’t a show, and that’s what I like about it. Every performance is different.
F: It’s about breaking that structure of having the artist far away. I think what moves the audience the most is that we are more palpable, more real. That the sound is right there beside you, that we walk by and…
E: …you can smell the perfume.
F: …you can smell a perfume, hers or mine. I think the reality of this show is what makes it different. That people take away…
E: The reactions also… The audience’s reactions, perhaps to a certain movement, and being able to feel that they are being receptive to what I am doing… I find that beautiful.
